Update on the Field (3/30/20)

Hey! Before I start, you should follow us on our new Instagram page!

So as you guys probably realize, narrowing down the field to 64 is going to take quite a while. We've decided to periodically update you guys so we can hold ourselves accountable. Each cycle, we're watching one movie from 2010, then one from 2011, then one from 2012, etc. We've made it through the first cycle, and here's what we've watched the last ten days, along with a brief comment on each movie:

3/20/20: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)
Tom: My first time seeing it - super fun, original, over-the-top, and a great cast!
Erin: I loved this movie in college and it's still really fun. Edgar Wright forevs.

3/21/20: Hugo (2011)
Tom: Had pretty low expectations for a Scorsese family film, but it was like a steampunk Roald Dahl-style story. I liked it a lot.
Erin: This was an awesome movie. I have enjoyed some of Brian Selznick's other work, so it was really cool to see this adaptation of his novel.

3/22/20: Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2012)
Tom: Apologies to my queen Emily Blunt, but this movie was as boring as the title sounds. A notable moment was my near-spit take when I saw Lord Varys with this hair.
Erin: This was about salmon fishing in the Yemen. I should have known.

3/23/20: Snowpiercer (2013)
Tom: I wasn't sold at first, but the movie ended up being great. Tilda Swinton stole the show. Didn't like it as much as Parasite though.
Erin: Edge of seat excitement! Really liked it! Will not watch it again!

3/24/20: Foxcatcher (2014)
Tom: Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo got nominated for this one, and deservedly so, but Channing Tatum was great too! A very interesting and tragic story.
Erin: I was looking forward to watching this, and I thought it was a really cool way to present a sports movie. It was slow-paced (which I enjoyed) and my king (Mark Ruffalo) was a king.

3/25/20: The Revenant (2015)
Tom: This was my second time seeing it. I understood it more this time, but it's still about an hour too long.
Erin: I DON'T LIKE THIS MOVIE and I feel bad for everyone that saw it in theaters after everyone was like "Oooooh Leo is sooooo good." I saw the same shot of a small blurry moon for twenty five seconds. Literally just twenty five seconds straight of a blurry moon. (??)

3/26/20: Miss Sloane (2016)
Tom: It's a Jessica Chastain political drama/thriller. You know what you're getting. It was good.
Erin: I liked this one! My dad loves this movie. I like the ending, which was a little twist and totally not realistic. I feel like a lot of movies focus on hyper-realism, and sometimes I like a little cinematic craziness.

3/27/20: Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Tom: There's no director like Taika Waititi. This franchise needed a breath of fresh air badly, and it got it. Hoping Love and Thunder is just as good.
Erin: I have been a Taika fan for years. If every Marvel movie was like this, I would be using my Disney+ account a lot more.

3/28/20: The Hate U Give (2018)
Tom: Compelling, fun when it needed to be, great chemistry between performers. Haven't read the book but really enjoyed the movie.
Erin: I adore this book and thought it was an excellent adaptation. A movie that transcends "Young Adult" stereotypes.

3/29/20: The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)
Tom: While I thought a lot of the plot was nonsense and Dakota Johnson's character was pretty flatly written, I couldn't stop smiling and laughing at Shia and Zack's scenes together.
Erin: I loved this!!!! Excellent acting and the movie wasn't a drag. Sometimes movies are just a slog to get through. This was a joy to watch for all 97 minutes.
