Best Movie of the 2010s: The Play-In Matchups
Hey everyone! After watching 200+ movies over the course of 14 months, we finally are here: it’s time for the Best Movie of the 2010s bracket! We narrowed our list down to the best 68 movies of the decade, and it took your help to conclude those final four play-in matchups in order to slim the list to the final 64! We put up polls on Instagram and Twitter and you guys let your opinions be heard. Thank you so much to everyone who voted! It was over 50 of you, which is incredible! Here are the results, and the last four movies in our bracket:
The Emma Stone-Off: EASY A (2010) vs. LA LA LAND (2016)
Emma Stone can do it all when it comes to movies, but she couldn’t beat…herself. You Stoners (what I’m calling Emma Stone fans from now on… it'll catch on, just you watch) weighed her breakout role in Easy A against her Oscar-winning performance in La La Land and, in a tight-knit contest, came up with the following results:
Instagram: Easy A - 31 (54.4%), La La Land - 26 (45.6%)
Twitter: Easy A - 3 (42.9%), La La Land - 4 (57.1%)
Total: Easy A - 34 (53.1%), La La Land - 30 (46.9%)
You guys love watching La La Land get upset, don’t you? The movie that tied for the most Oscar nominations of all time is OUT. Olive Penderghast moves on!
Winner: EASY A (2010)
2017 Action Movies: LOGAN (2017) vs. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 (2017)
Second, we’ve got two bona fide action movie stars coming at each other with firepower. Was it the invincible Logan or the seemingly immortal John Wick that would prevail?
Instagram: Logan - 22 (52.4%), John Wick: Chapter 2 - 20 (47.6%)
Twitter: Logan - 1 (25%), John Wick: Chapter 2 - 3 (75%)
Total: Logan - 23 (50%), John Wick: Chapter 2 - 23 (50%)
It’s…a tie?! I reached out to a friend of mine who loves both of these movies and couldn’t get on Instagram or Twitter to answer the question, and his choice was…Logan. Really scientific stuff here. And so, many a fan question played itself out here: there is only one man who can kill John Wick. That man is Wolverine - but something tells me he used something other than a pencil.
Winner: LOGAN (2017)
Nolan vs. Nolan: INCEPTION (2010) vs. INTERSTELLAR (2013)
Next, we had two Christopher Nolan blockbuster sci-fi films clashing, as Inception took on Interstellar. Leo vs. McConaughey. Dreams and time vs. space and time. Michael Caine vs. Michael Caine. Hans Zimmer vs…Hans Zimmer. Okay you get the point. Both movies similarly blew viewers’ minds, but which one blew the other out of the tournament?
Instagram: Inception - 35 (66%), Interstellar - 18 (34%)
Twitter: Inception - 4 (80%), Interstellar - 1 (20%)
Total: Inception - 39 (67.2%), Interstellar - 19 (32.8%)
Inception comes first in the dictionary and it also comes first in this matchup. This ending is more concrete than the ending of Inception and makes a whole lot more sense than Interstellar. Moving into the tournament and sending Interstellar to a fiery death (icy death? watery death? that movie had all kinds of elemental demise going on in it) is Inception.
Winner: INCEPTION (2010)
Pixar vs. Pixar: TOY STORY 3 (2010) vs. COCO (2017)
Two of the most beloved Pixar movies ever made faced off in our final play-in matchup, and what I thought was going to be a close one was an absolute drubbing. This was by far the biggest margin between contenders. Here are the results for the final matchup:
Instagram: Toy Story 3 - 12 (21.8%), Coco - 43 (78.2%)
Twitter: Toy Story 3 - 3 (37.5%), Coco - 5 (62.5%)
Total: Toy Story 3 - 15 (23.8%), Coco - 48 (76.2%)
Wow. Ruthless. Coco does what Lotso couldn’t do - it sends Woody and the gang straight to the incinerator after all. We will remember you, Toy Story 3. So long, partner. But it’s Coco that fills the final spot in the Best Movie of the 2010s bracket and avoids the Land of the Dead for another day.
Winner: COCO (2017)
So that’s it for now! You chose Easy A, Logan, Inception, and Coco as your choices to fill out the bracket. Thank you again to everyone who voted and we hope you’ll keep on voting as we move forward! The final 64 movies are set, and the next time you hear from us, it will be for the full-fledged bracket reveal! Go follow @motionpicturemadness on Instagram to get the news as soon as it drops!
